# What is GEO?

On this page

## GEO Defined

Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is the practice of structuring web content so that AI-powered search engines — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude — can retrieve, understand, and cite it accurately. While traditional SEO optimises for search engine result pages (SERPs), GEO optimises for AI-generated answers. The two are complementary, not competing.

## Why GEO Matters

AI search engines are fundamentally changing how people find information. Instead of clicking through ten blue links, users receive synthesised answers with citations. If your content isn't structured for retrieval, it won't be included in these answers — and you'll miss an increasingly significant traffic channel. Studies suggest AI-driven search will handle over 40% of informational queries by 2027.

## GEO vs Traditional SEO

Traditional SEO focuses on keywords, backlinks, and technical compliance. GEO adds a structural layer: content must be chunked into self-contained paragraphs, rich in named entities, clearly defined, and written in a neutral authoritative tone. You don't abandon SEO — you layer GEO strategies on top. The result is content that performs in both traditional and AI search.

## Getting Started with GEO

Start by running a Topicker analysis on your website to get your GEO readiness score. Identify your weakest dimensions, then implement the Quick Wins recommendations. Focus on three high-impact changes first: add definition blocks to key articles, increase entity density to 8+ per 1,000 words, and restructure headings to mirror natural language queries.
